Description

With the funding initiative "Grid-forming capabilities for more resilient and RES-based electricity grids," the European Commission supports pioneering innovation projects for the development and demonstration of grid-forming technologies and inverters from December 2025 under the "BATTERIES and ENERGY" program. The open EU-wide call promotes consortia consisting of transmission system operators (TSOs), distribution system operators (DSOs), GFI technology providers, renewable energy producers, as well as universities and research institutions. The goal is the prototypical research and practical validation of new grid control concepts to enhance the stability, flexibility, and resilience of power grids with a high share of renewable energies. Eligible applicants are legal entities from EU member states and Horizon Europe associated countries, acting in consortia with at least three independent partners from different countries and committing to open science and gender mainstreaming. The maximum funding rate is 70%, and up to 100% for non-profit organizations.

The funding period ends with the submission of the complete project documentation by March 31, 2026. Selected projects will receive up to €10 million and will be validated in at least two pilot projects in different countries. Evaluation criteria include the degree of innovation, contribution to sustainability goals, relevance to European climate targets, as well as the quality and feasibility of implementation. Applications are submitted electronically via the Funding & Tenders Portal; required documents include, among others, the project description, technical specifications, financing plan, CVs, and communication concept. The initiative contributes to making Europe's power grids fit for full decarbonization by 2050 and accelerating the transition to a secure, flexible energy system based on renewable sources.
