In Vienna, hail insurance subsidies support agricultural enterprises, cooperatives, and private individuals in securing against risks caused by extreme weather conditions and animal epidemics. A nationwide insurance company is granted a subsidy amounting to 27.5% of the premium costs, provided that the State of Vienna contributes an equal amount. Subsidies are granted for premiums covering protection against hail, frost, drought, storms, heavy rain including floods, as well as snow pressure, and premiums covering losses due to animal diseases and epidemics as listed in the regulations of the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) or national ordinances. Applications can be submitted continuously without time restrictions, requiring a valid insurance policy and proof of state funds.
The measure aims to reduce financial losses in agriculture and to create an incentive for taking out insurance. Eligible applicants are natural persons, micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises who operate an agricultural business in their own name and on their own account. The subsidy is paid out directly via the premium invoice and is financed from disaster fund resources.
