Description

The Leibniz Institute of European History (IEG) in Mainz awards 6- to 12-month research fellowships twice a year for doctoral candidates from Germany and abroad who focus on European issues from the Early Modern Period to Contemporary History. Funded projects include those in the fields of religious, political, social, cultural, and environmental history as well as Digital Humanities, particularly with comparative, transnational, or global perspectives. The fellowship primarily supports the writing of the dissertation and includes a monthly stipend of €1,350, optionally supplemented by a family allowance. Preparatory research, language courses, or the revision of book manuscripts are not eligible for funding. Doctoral candidates whose doctorate was awarded no more than three years ago must hold a relevant degree (M.A., state examination, diploma, or ecclesiastical examination) in history, history of religion, historical theology, or a comparable historically oriented discipline and possess good English skills as well as the willingness to be fully present at the institute.

Application deadlines are February 15 (starting from September) and August 15 (starting from March). Required documents include a CV, if applicable a list of publications, table of contents and exposé of the dissertation project (max. 15,000 characters), a detailed work and time schedule, certificates, language certificates, and two letters of recommendation from supervisors or external experts. Selection criteria are academic qualification, a convincing exposé draft, the use of digital methods or environmental history topics, and relevance to the IEG’s research agenda. The fellowship offers, in addition to intensive supervision by institute staff, access to specialized library holdings, collegial exchange in colloquia and workshops, as well as affordable accommodation in the fellows’ residence. The call is aimed at research-driven early-career scholars who wish to advance their dissertation in an international, interdisciplinary environment.
