Description

The interdisciplinary early vision support and family counseling in Styria is aimed at children with visual impairment or blindness aged 0 to 6 years (or up to three months after school entry) and their families. Based on special education principles, support is provided in the familiar home environment to optimally promote early childhood developmental processes in the visual system. Targeted services strengthen the children's motor, cognitive, and communicative abilities and help prevent secondary disabilities. The close integration of everyday family life ensures sustainable support, while interdisciplinary exchange between therapists, educators, physicians, and other specialists tailors individual support to specific needs. As an ongoing grant program, the initiative has been available without time limitation since 2013.

Funding is provided to private special education institutional partners commissioned under a written service agreement. A prerequisite for the grant is a valid official notice of visual impairment or blindness, proof of visual functional loss, cerebral visual impairment (CVI), or visual developmental delay, as well as compliance with the age limit. Applications can be submitted at any time. Processing is based on a service contract with the Styrian Provincial Government, with payments made directly to the institutions. Parents and caregivers benefit from professional support that not only promotes the child's development but also sustainably supports social interaction and integration into everyday life.
