Description

The International Mathematics Olympiad is aimed at particularly high-achieving students in Germany who wish to test their mathematical talent at an international level. As a multi-stage selection competition, the program begins in autumn with two written exams, to which successful participants from the second round of the Federal Mathematics Competition, the federal round of the Mathematics Olympiad, or state winners in the subject of mathematics at "Jugend forscht" are invited. Those who excel here qualify for intensive preparatory seminars, where experienced mathematicians impart both subject-specific expertise and train high-level problem-solving strategies. The crowning conclusion is a seminar at the renowned Mathematical Research Institute Oberwolfach, where the six-member German team for the International Mathematics Olympiad is selected. Applications are accepted continuously, aimed at individuals residing or attending school in Germany, with a maximum age limit of 20 years or no university studies commenced.

As a prize and recognition, the program supports young aspiring mathematicians through structured competition exams and support events with the goal of discovering outstanding talents and optimally preparing them for the IMO. Evaluation is based on the results of the preliminary exams and performance in the preparatory seminars. Participation is free of charge and offers, in addition to academic excellence, the opportunity to exchange ideas with like-minded peers from across Germany. This competition opens doors to international contacts and strengthens mathematical talent development in the long term – ideal for all who have already achieved national success and wish to elevate their skills to the global stage.
