Description
The funding program Investment Grant for Barrier Reduction – Age-Appropriate Renovation supports private individuals throughout Germany with construction measures that reduce barriers in single- and two-family houses as well as apartments and create age-appropriate living comfort. Owners, first-time buyers of renovated properties, condominium owners’ associations, and tenants (with modernization agreements) can apply for a grant between 10% and 12.5% of the eligible costs. Material and labor costs (craftsmen and expert services) as well as value-added tax are funded, up to a grant amount of €6,250 per housing unit. A prerequisite is that the planned work has not yet begun and that a specialized company is involved according to technical minimum requirements. The measures range from level access, wider doors, and ramps to stairlifts and elevator solutions, as well as barrier-free bathrooms and smart home assistance systems.
The application is submitted digitally via the KfW grant portal before commissioning supply or service contracts. Required documents include the completed application, proof of identity (Schufa, video, or postal identification), invoices with cost evidence, and confirmation of proper execution by the performing company. When applying on behalf of condominium owners’ associations, powers of attorney and a list of owners are also required. The funding is ongoing as long as funds are available. The goal is to create barrier-reduced living environments and to improve the quality of life in one’s own home in the long term.
