Description
“Youth Shapes School!” by the Saxon Youth Foundation offers secondary schools in Dresden an active participation format to sustainably strengthen democratic action competencies. Over the course of two school years, steering groups composed of students and teachers independently develop ideas for school development, collect proposals, assess feasibility, and vote democratically. A budget of €1,500 per school year is available, which can be used for projects such as green classrooms, digital screens, or drinking fountains following the student parliament’s decision. Accompanied by regular workshops, networking events, and on-site consultation, participants experience how collaborative design fosters responsibility and enriches everyday school life.
Applications are open to secondary schools, community schools, grammar schools, and special needs schools in Dresden that have not yet participated in “Youth Shapes School!” or comparable programs. Requirements include a jointly signed letter of intent from the student council and school administration, a motivating project outline, and the assurance that two teachers or school social workers will accompany the steering group. Selection is based on location, participation potential, regular support, and territorial distribution. Interested schools must submit the complete application package by April 17, 2026, consisting of a letter of motivation, letter of intent, and signatures. The project start is planned for September 1, 2026. The program not only strengthens the culture of co-determination but also achieves long-term certification that enables independent project work and subsequent funding.
