Description
A one-year full-time research fellowship from the Jung Foundation for Science and Research supports doctoral candidates at the Institute for the History and Ethics of Medicine at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf in examining medical history during National Socialism. With a sum of €15,000 (monthly €1,250), outstanding medical students are supported who engage scientifically with topics such as forced sterilization, medical persecution of Jewish colleagues, and crimes against patients. The funds provided are unrestricted and enable intensive project work in English. The focus is on innovative research projects that address previously unresolved questions and close historiographical gaps. Selection is made by the review committee based on the quality, relevance, and presentation skills of the applicants.
Eligible to apply are full-time enrolled doctoral candidates at the University of Hamburg who will complete their doctoral project within 12 months. In addition to the project description (max. 450 words) and working title, a brief justification of relevance (max. 60 words), a detailed timeline, a one-page CV, and a supervision statement from the institute must be submitted. The deadline for submitting all documents is March 31, 2026. Submission of the research work to the UKE is a prerequisite, as is participation in the three-minute English presentation before the Scientific Advisory Board. This fellowship offers early-career researchers the opportunity to illuminate central aspects of National Socialist medical history from a new perspective.
