Description
The free school year program kicken&lesen KölnBonn by the 1. FC Köln Foundation combines football and reading sessions to strengthen the reading skills of boys aged 10–14 in North Rhine-Westphalia. Over ten months, participants from special, secondary, intermediate, and comprehensive schools in the CologneBonn region meet weekly for a varied mix of physical activity and reading phases. Teachers accompany the boys as they collect pages read and support them in the playful acquisition of language skills. Through close cooperation with the sk stiftung jugend und medien, a sustainable learning environment is created that promotes both cognitive and social competencies.
As part of a competition, participants collect points for their school—whether through a football tournament, the total number of pages read, or creative book slams. Highlights include a joint training day at the 1. FC Köln facilities, attending home matches, participating as flag bearers, and finally the trophy presentation on the pitch of the RheinEnergieSTADION. With a 100% funding rate, the program is open to schools in the region wishing to register boys in the specified age group. Applications are accepted year-round, allowing educational institutions to easily benefit from this innovative combination of sports and reading promotion.
