Film Funding

The film funding of the State of Vorarlberg supports small cinema enterprises (small cinemas) with the aim of preserving and expanding the diversity and quality of film culture in the region. Operating costs, film programming costs, as well as administrative expenses of Vorarlberg’s small cinemas are funded. A prerequisite for an application is the proof of all films shown in the previous year, including detailed information that provides a comprehensive overview of the number and diversity of the program. The selection is made by the Film Expert Commission, which considers strategic concepts as well as the significance of Austrian film and the audience engagement efforts. Submissions must be made via a fully completed “General Culture Funding Application” including a list of all films shown in the previous year by the end of January of the following year. A timely and content-precise presentation of all required documents ensures eligibility for funding.

The decision on the grant is based on a transparent evaluation procedure in accordance with the guidelines of the Vorarlberg State Government. Upon receipt of the applications, the State Department of Culture reviews the formal requirements before the Art Commission Film conducts the professional assessment. The funding volume is aligned with the funds provided in the state budget and is paid out in the form of direct subsidies. Funding is only possible if at least half of the requested funds are allocated to regional cinema operations. Reclaims may occur in cases of inaccurate application submission, delayed implementation, or deviations from the intended purpose. The goal is sustainable support that strengthens the small cinema as a cultural meeting point and helps profile Vorarlberg as a committed location for film enthusiasts.
