Description

The funding program "Crisis Management and Reconstruction, Infrastructure (FR/KWI)" of the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) enables organizations in Germany to implement measures for the sustainable management of crises as well as the reconstruction of essential infrastructure. Through structural transitional aid, projects are supported that address four central fields of action – food security, reconstruction of basic infrastructure and services, disaster risk management, and peaceful and inclusive coexistence. This instrument aims to strengthen the resilience of vulnerable groups as well as local structures, reduce humanitarian needs, and create long-term development perspectives. The program’s flexible approach allows systemic responses to the interrelations of crises through multisectoral measures while also considering aspects such as participation and gender equality.

Eligible for funding are educational institutions, public organizations, companies, and start-ups that carry out projects in the interest of development policy. Funding is provided as a grant and can cover up to 90% of the eligible total expenses – for a project duration of up to 60 months. The application procedure is single-stage, with the application to be submitted no later than eight weeks before the start of the measure. Crucial are also the professional, organizational, and financial capacity of the applicants as well as compliance with the Federal Government’s development policy guidelines. This strict evaluation process ensures that the planned projects not only address acute crises in the short term but also contribute sustainably to strengthening resilience and stabilizing local structures.

Thus, the funding measure offers interested actors an attractive opportunity to develop and implement innovative solutions in crisis situations. In addition to the reconstruction of damaged infrastructure, measures for training skilled personnel, improving basic services, and long-term risk reduction are also supported. Through participatory approaches and the involvement of local actors, projects are designed to meet the specific needs on site. Overall, the program makes an important contribution to the prevention of future crises and sustainable development by opening up perspectives for affected people and laying the foundation for structural change.
