Description
The Mathematics Olympiad in Germany is a nationwide competition that targets gifted and interested students from grades 3 to 13. In four consecutive rounds – school, regional, state, and national – mathematical skills are promoted, creative thinking is trained, and enthusiasm for challenging problems is sparked. Participants work on demanding problems that go far beyond the regular school curriculum and thus have the opportunity to meet like-minded peers. Registration is done through the state coordinators, with support provided in the form of intellectual networking and financial assistance through medals and cash prizes. The higher rounds conclude with ceremonial award ceremonies organized by the federal states in spring. Approximately 200,000 young mathematicians participate annually and have the chance to qualify for international competitions.
The funding objective of the Mathematics Olympiad is to identify mathematical talent early and develop it purposefully. Through the multi-stage structure, participants experience not only the competition for prizes but also professional exchange with experts and peers. The four rounds each begin in the new school year with the homework round, followed by written exams in November (regional round), February (state round), and May/June (national round). A special focus is placed on creative solution approaches and perseverance, which are considered evaluation criteria in all rounds. The nationwide organization by the association Mathematik-Olympiaden e. V. is supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as well as the Hector Foundation II, enabling private participants to benefit from comprehensive support.
