Description

The Media Forward Fund supports public-benefit media organizations in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland in developing sustainable quality journalism offerings. The focus is particularly on projects in science and data journalism that close gaps in reporting through innovative approaches and strengthen democratic participation. Through biannual calls for proposals in February and September, funding partners can apply for up to €400,000 to build or expand viable business models. Evaluation is based on the criteria of transformation, user-centricity, diversity, independence, and quality. A prerequisite for funding is that the organization is based in the funding region and engages in public-benefit journalistic activities that contribute to social cohesion and democratic discourse culture.

The Joachim Herz Foundation, as a co-funder, brings its expertise in science communication and innovation and coordinates the funding together with an independent jury. The goal is to strengthen media diversity, enable new formats, and secure the long-term financial viability of independent media offerings. Applications will be accepted starting September 1, 2026; interested parties will receive detailed information on the scope, process, and focus areas of the Launch Grants, Strategy Grants, and Growth Grants in the respective funding rounds. By pooling philanthropic resources, a sustainable funding structure is created that effectively supports media organizations in growing innovative journalistic formats.
