Description
The funding initiative "Model Region Bioeconomy in the Rhenish Revier (Phase II)" of the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space aims to advance the structural transformation in North Rhine-Westphalia towards a resource-efficient and sustainable bioeconomy. Application-oriented research and development projects with a duration of up to five years are supported, which promote the transition to a circular economy, increase regional value creation, and create new jobs. Eligible applicants are universities, non-university research and scientific institutions, public bodies, non-profit organizations, as well as commercial enterprises—especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs)—with an establishment or branch in the Rhenish Revier. Project funding is provided as a non-repayable grant and can cover up to 100% of eligible costs or expenditures, including expenses for science communication, standardization and norm-setting activities, as well as CO₂ compensation payments for business travel.
The two-stage procedure begins with the submission of a project outline by February 18, 2026, via the electronic easy-Online portal. In the second stage, the project sponsor Jülich invites selected consortia to submit a formal application. Evaluation criteria include, among others, the degree of innovation, contribution to regional structural change, and sustainability aspects. The Model Region Bioeconomy is divided into three modules: Module I supports follow-up measures at the Bio4MatPro Competence Center and the BioREVIER PLUS Innovation Cluster, Module II enables new R&D projects with a bioeconomic focus, and Module III strengthens coordination and accompanying research through a central office. Funding is expected to commence no earlier than January 1, 2027. Participants benefit from comprehensive support by the project sponsor Jülich and actively contribute to the implementation of the National Bioeconomy Strategy.
