Description
Peatland Development 3.0 promotes the large-scale revitalization and renaturation of peatlands in the Diepholz district. The focus is on comprehensive land management, targeted land acquisition, and rewetting measures to strengthen both peatland and climate protection. The third program phase builds on the previous successes of the Nature Conservation Foundation in the Diepholz district, which has been active in numerous peatland projects since the 1980s. Through cooperation with the Office for Regional State Development Leine-Weser, floodplain and peatland areas are made available via land consolidation procedures to restore ecological functions such as water retention, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity. Initial measures, such as in the Barver North land consolidation area, demonstrate how successfully raised bog areas can be reactivated through peat accumulation, ditch filling, and removal of woody vegetation.
Eligible for funding are public and non-profit institutions, including nature conservation organizations, municipal and state authorities, as well as cooperation partners in the field of peatland and climate protection. A prerequisite for funding is the implementation of projects within the Diepholz district and cooperation with the Office for Regional State Development Leine-Weser. The Nature Conservation Foundation continuously provides funds as a grant provider to enable the rewetting of peatland areas spanning several hundred hectares. This not only contributes to the restoration of sensitive habitats but also supports long-term climate protection strategies and increases the region’s biodiversity. Interested applicants are encouraged to submit their renaturation projects and thus jointly make a valuable contribution to the preservation and protection of peatlands in the district.
