Support for Early-Career Researchers (Doctoral Funding & Study Grants)

The German-Ethiopian Foundation supports Ethiopian academics who already hold a university degree from their home country through a comprehensive program for promoting young talent. This includes, in particular, doctoral scholarships in Germany, coupled with the obligation to return to Ethiopia, as well as study grants and awards for outstanding achievements in the B.A. and M.A. programs in Ethiopian Studies and Manuscript Cultures at the University of Hamburg. As a nationwide open funding program, education, research, and innovation projects in Northeast Africa are sustainably strengthened. The grants are characterized by continuous allocation without fixed deadlines, allowing interested applicants to submit their application documents at any time.

Prerequisites for successful funding, in addition to Ethiopian citizenship and enrollment at a German university, are excellent academic performance and the willingness to contribute to the development of the home region after completing the doctorate. Through this commitment, the program helps to qualify young professionals who will advance science, development cooperation, agriculture, and rural development locally in the long term. The funding is equally aimed at dedicated doctoral candidates and talented students, thereby strengthening the scientific infrastructure of Northeast Africa.
