Description
The funding program "Large-Scale Nature Conservation Projects" supports initiatives nationwide that contribute to the permanent preservation and sustainable development of natural and cultural landscapes in Germany. It is aimed at public institutions, non-profit organizations, and special-purpose associations that wish to implement nature conservation-related projects. With an annual funding volume of €14,000,000, projects are financially supported that impress through their large-scale nature, representativeness, and closeness to nature—whether in terms of preserving endangered animal and plant species or as drivers for regional development. The program pursues a holistic approach that integrates aspects of climate protection, energy efficiency, as well as environmental and animal protection into a comprehensive concept.
Eligible for funding are projects whose eligible expenses consist of planning, implementation, and specific project costs. With a funding rate of 75%, a substantial financial basis is provided for the implementation of sustainable measures. Applications can be submitted continuously, allowing interested parties to submit their project outlines and proposals at any time. In addition to proof of a registered office in Germany and the involvement of the responsible state authorities, all documents must comply with the current funding guidelines. The selection criteria—including representativeness, large-scale nature, closeness to nature, threat level, and exemplary feasibility—ensure a transparent and targeted evaluation of project ideas. The Federal Agency for Nature Conservation provides applicants with professional and budgetary advice to ensure the precise implementation of the measures.
The large-scale nature conservation projects make a significant contribution to securing ecologically valuable habitats while also providing an important contribution to regional and supra-regional development. By preserving extensive natural areas, not only is biodiversity protected, but the socio-economic environment is also strengthened. This funding instrument enables initiators to practically test and apply innovative concepts for landscape management and nature conservation development in the long term. With a focus on sustainable development and the protection of cultural landscapes, the program also sets new standards in the orientation of environmental policy funding measures. The continuous submission of project outlines and applications underscores the program’s flexibility and adaptability, which responds to the current challenges of nature conservation in Germany.
