Description

The EU-funded call targets research and innovation projects that develop methods, tools, and concepts for measuring, modeling, and mitigating non-exhaust particle emissions in road and rail transport. Funding is provided for Research and Innovation Actions (RIA) where consortia of at least three independent partners from two countries develop innovative measurement techniques and simulation tools to determine emission factors and analyze impacts on health and the environment. Special focus is placed on particles from brake and tire wear, wheel-rail contact, and road surface wear, as well as their dispersion in urban and rural areas. Based on this, mitigation concepts and economic assessments will be created to establish KPIs and present cost-benefit analyses. The total funding amount is €7.5 million, with funding rates of up to 100%. Applicants must be based in EU Member States or associated countries and cooperate as a consortium. Submission deadlines in the two-phase procedure are 14 April and 8 October 2026, each at 17:00 (Brussels time). Eligible costs include personnel expenses, consumables, equipment, travel and accommodation, subcontracting, and materials.

Interested research institutions, universities, universities of applied sciences, technology providers, and industry partners, especially SMEs, will find in this call an opportunity to contribute their expertise in mobility and emissions research. In addition to scientific excellence, evaluation criteria include the quality of innovation, implementation strategy, and expected impact on the environment and health. Applications based on clearly structured project descriptions, financial plans, and exploitation strategies offer the chance to actively shape the EU strategy for sustainable mobility and to reduce the burden of non-exhaust particles in the long term.
