Description

Within the framework of the co-programmed partnership Zero Emission Waterborne Transport (ZEWT), the European Commission funds industrial consortia consisting of shipping companies, shipbuilders, equipment manufacturers, research institutions, and other partners with the aim of demonstrating integrated renewable energy systems and efficiency technologies on ships. The project pursues the ambitious goal of reducing fuel consumption on board by at least 55% by 2030 compared to the reference year 2008. To this end, technologies such as hybrid and electric drives, wind assistance, air lubrication systems, or solar modules are to be combined and tested in real operational environments. A standardized methodology for measuring and verifying savings, as well as interfaces to digital energy management systems and certification bodies, forms the basis for the implementation of FuelEU Maritime. Additionally, safety and operational aspects, training requirements for crew and port personnel, as well as ecological interactions with emissions such as NOx or black carbon, are evaluated.

Eligible for funding are consortia of at least three independent legal entities from different EU Member States or associated countries; SMEs and large enterprises receive up to 70% grant for project-related expenses (personnel costs, subcontractors, travel expenses, equipment). The maximum funding amount is €6,500,000, with a project duration of 36 months. Tender documents include Part A and B of the application, project description, financial plan, summary, and CVs of key personnel. The submission deadline is April 14, 2027 (submission start: December 15, 2026). Evaluation is based on the degree of innovation of the energy systems, savings potential, relevance to FuelEU Maritime, as well as consortium quality and implementation plan. Projects with high evaluation scores will enter grant negotiations and be funded via a lump-sum-based Horizon Europe Grant Agreement.
