Description

The EU-funded research initiative aims to uncover the driving causes behind the rapid decline of selected wild species in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems and to develop practical, scalable solutions. Participating consortia from companies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and public bodies from EU member states or associated countries contribute their expertise in biodiversity, ecosystem, and environmental sciences. In the two-stage submission process (deadlines 16.04.2026 and 23.09.2026), project ideas are initially evaluated based on their level of innovation and conservation potential, before full proposals with detailed concepts and CVs of the scientific leadership are submitted. The funded duration allows for comprehensive analysis and testing of pilot measures that provide policymakers and practitioners with robust scenarios.

A prerequisite for application is a consortium of at least three independent partners with experience in international environmental research projects. Personnel costs, material expenses, and travel costs are funded at 100%. The maximum budget is €3 million, allocated to research and innovation – from hypothesis formulation through prototype validation to the preparation of long-term monitoring programs. Key selection criteria, in addition to scientific excellence and project implementation efficiency, are primarily the potential for sustainable restoration of stable populations and support for the European Biodiversity Strategy 2030. The results are intended to enable decision-making bodies to protect valuable natural areas and secure vital ecosystem services permanently.
