Prize for Monument Preservation

The Monument Preservation Award honors outstandingly restored historic buildings in Hamburg every three years and is aimed at private individuals committed to monument protection. As a financially endowed award in the fields of culture, buildings and monument preservation, culture & media, as well as infrastructure & urban development, this recognition draws public attention to exemplary restoration projects. The initiative is sponsored by the Patriotic Society of 1765, which continuously accepts applications and thus offers interested parties the opportunity to be nominated at any time. The goal is to make monument preservation efforts visible and to recognize the high quality of professional restorations. Documentation of the award winners and the objects of the “Shortlist” is published in regularly issued brochures, thereby making the completed projects accessible to a broad professional audience.

Funding is provided to owners as well as planners, especially clients and architects, who advance the preservation of historic building fabric through their commitment. The evaluation is based on two central criteria: the commitment to monument preservation and the quality of the restoration. As a one-time award, the prize acknowledges the potential for sustainable use of listed buildings and motivates further exemplary measures in the urban space.
