Description

The EU-funded research and innovation initiative within the BATT4EU Partnership is dedicated to the sustainable production of battery electrode materials and the development of bio-based materials. The focus is on innovative process and refining technologies for the environmentally friendly processing of raw materials, as well as the validation of new methods that ensure significant savings in emissions, energy consumption, and chemicals. Alternatively, project consortia may also explore and pilot processes for producing synthetic graphite and other carbon-based components from European biomass resources. Funding is aimed at companies (especially SMEs), research institutions, universities, non-profit, and public organizations from EU member states and associated countries. Personnel costs, material expenses, as well as travel and subsistence costs are funded at a rate of 100% up to €7.1 million per project. A prerequisite is a consortium of at least three legal, independent entities from three different countries. An application deadline of September 15, 2026 (submission via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal) enables interdisciplinary teams to provide high-tech solutions along the value chain from material development to application.

The projects make a significant contribution to strengthening European cell and raw material value chains, reducing dependency on imports, and implementing a climate-neutral energy transition. Evaluation will be based on the criteria of excellence, impact, and quality and efficiency of implementation. Successful consortia will develop market-ready solutions that represent an important step towards the production of battery-grade materials and circular economy approaches in battery technology. Through close cooperation with the European Commission and monitoring of the Batt4EU indicators, a framework is created for the sustainable scaling of pioneering technologies for the next generation of batteries.
