Project Funding by the Foundation for Building Democracy from Below

The project funding of the Democracy from Below Foundation is aimed at non-profit organizations, interest groups, associations, and educational institutions in the state of Brandenburg. We are seeking grassroots democratic initiatives such as seminars, workshops, exhibitions, and publications that strengthen democratic thinking and encourage collective action. Grants of up to €5,000 are awarded to initiatives characterized by regional anchoring and innovative methods—whether in the context of coming to terms with the past or with a focus on future-oriented issues. Application documents include a project outline, a detailed financing plan, and the completed application form; non-profit status must be demonstrated by a current tax exemption certificate. There is no legal entitlement to funding; decisions are made by the board together with the advisory council.

Particularly of interest are projects by initiatives, associations, schools, and educational institutions that promote democracy education for children, adolescents, and adults. Engagement is evaluated based on criteria such as grassroots democratic orientation, methodological innovation, and regional integration. Funding applications can be submitted at any time, as the program operates without fixed deadlines and offers ongoing funding opportunities. The goal is to strengthen civil society engagement in Brandenburg and to create learning spaces for democracy where openness, tolerance, and active participation can flourish.
