Description
Since 1989, the Sonnenfeld Foundation has supported doctoral candidates in Berlin with targeted scholarships for human medicine and natural sciences. High school graduates and graduates up to 26 years old with above-average academic degrees can independently carry out their research projects at leading Berlin institutions. The funding extends over twelve months and is divided into three scholarship types, tailored to the respective level of education: students in their main course of study (6th–7th semester) receive a monthly scholarship of €834, including flexible reimbursement of health and long-term care insurance contributions (up to €200) as well as a child allowance (€100). After completing the state examination or master's degree, the funding amount increases to €1,200 per month and can be extended by an additional year if needed. This flexible structure enables seamless support from doctoral preparation through to the doctorate itself.
Applications must include a cover letter, a complete CV, relevant academic transcripts, a project outline (max. 10 pages), and a reference letter from the supervising university management. Selection is based on outstanding academic achievements, innovation potential, and clear scientific objectives. The decision is made by the foundation’s board in regular meetings; the exact submission deadline for applications will be announced in due time. In addition to financial support, the Sonnenfeld Foundation promotes young researchers through networking among scholarship holders and the board acting as mentors. An annual interim report ensures transparency regarding the progress and results of the funded research projects.
