Description

The funding initiative “Quality Journalism: Media Literacy Promotion” supports media education institutions and media owners active throughout Austria in imparting sustainable media and reading literacy to students. With a grant of up to 20% on the regular sales price of free print, e-paper, or online subscriptions for a maximum of four months per school year, the direct distribution of current newspapers and magazines to schools is promoted. Eligible to apply are companies, non-profit organizations, and public institutions that cooperatively work with schools in a representative manner and implement concepts to convey the importance of reading in printed and digital media. The program is valid until June 30, 2029; funding applications can be submitted annually by March 31.

Applicants must demonstrate compliance with the funding requirements: organizational representation of multiple media owners, appropriate teaching and distribution offerings in the classroom, as well as proof of orders and costs. Funded are personnel expenses, material costs, as well as expenses for subscriptions and their distribution. Evaluation criteria include the representativeness of the institution, verifiable successes in media literacy promotion, and the cost-effectiveness of resource use. Additionally, the application must include an activity report, a balance sheet or cost-revenue statement, and proof of cooperation with schools. The funding makes a significant contribution to strengthening the critical judgment of young people and contributes in the long term to the diversity and quality of Austrian journalism.
