Description
The school travel allowance supports students and mandatory curriculum-integrated interns throughout Austria with travel costs between their place of residence and the school or internship location, as well as, if necessary, a secondary accommodation. As a monthly subsidy under the Family Burden Equalization Act 1967, this funding ensures equal opportunities and reliable participation in classes. Eligible are regular students at public or equivalent schools within Austria or in neighboring foreign countries if the shortest route is at least 2 km (exception in case of disability). Additionally, funding eligibility exists for participants in mandatory internships who commute daily to the internship location. Prerequisites include receipt of family allowance and submission of a school or internship confirmation as well as an intern employment contract.
The amount of the subsidy depends on the distance and school attendance days: for school routes, flat rates range from €4.40 to €39.40 per month; for secondary accommodations, from €19 to €58 per month. If public transportation is available, alternatively, the price of the local student network ticket minus a flat deductible of €19.60 is used as the basis and distributed proportionally over the months. The allowance can be applied for up to ten months per school year – up to eleven months in connection with internships. The funding application must be submitted to the tax office by June 30 of the calendar year following the school year. This ensures smooth school attendance and effectively reduces financial barriers on the way to school.
