Description
The FWF supports excellent independent scientific book publications in Austria through non-repayable grants of up to €22,000. The goal is the simultaneous open-access publication in the FWF E-Book Library to make research results accessible to a broad public. Funding covers production costs, translation and proofreading costs, as well as archiving in open access. Eligible applicants are individuals and educational institutions with predominantly Austria-based scientific activity or under the responsibility of an Austrian research institution. A prerequisite is the high scientific quality of the manuscript as well as the mandatory simultaneous open-access publication under a Creative Commons license (CC BY 4.0 or CC BY-NC 4.0). The manuscript (including table of contents, bibliography, and indexes) as well as a declaration of commitment from the publisher must be submitted via the online portal elane. The review is conducted internationally, evaluating innovation content, format, and choice of publisher. Continuous submission of applications is possible; the funding period is up to 36 months.
The application submission must include the manuscript PDF, application and contact form, cost breakdown, abstract, and list of co-authors. Optionally, cost calculations for additional expenses or exclusion lists of reviewers can be uploaded. Upon approval, a funding contract to be signed digitally follows, succeeded by partial or final payments upon proof of proofreading/foreign language proofreading and provision of the open-access version. Through the “Independent Publications” program, the FWF makes an important contribution to the visibility and dissemination of Austrian research results both domestically and internationally.
