Description

The City Vegetables program enables integrative community gardening in the urban area of Hamburg and is aimed equally at individuals as well as educational institutions of all age groups. In public community gardens, people of different generations, origins, and social backgrounds meet experienced project leaders to actively participate together from planting to harvest. The focus is on neighborhood cohesion, intercultural exchange, and strengthening urban ecological greenery. Accompanying winter activities such as communal cooking promote mutual acquaintance and deepen the understanding of cultural diversity and sustainable nutrition. The integrative gardens create vibrant meeting places and make a concrete contribution to climate and environmental protection as well as social participation.

Funding is provided in the form of non-material support through advice, networking, and professional exchange, as well as grants for the implementation of local urban farming activities. There is no application deadline; participation is continuously possible. Eligible for funding are private gardeners and educational institutions who register via informal email notification before their first visit and arrange an appointment with the respective project management. The goal is the sustainable improvement of the ecological condition of the metropolis and the strengthening of social cohesion. Interested parties receive all relevant information about community gardening and the registration process from the WAS TUN! Foundation for Social Engagement. Permanent involvement in the community plots is possible, as is limited-time engagement at one or more City Vegetables locations.
