Description
The Mozarteum University Salzburg offers a specialized degree program in Alpine Folk Music within the field of Instrumental and Vocal Pedagogy. The curriculum includes practice-oriented modules for accordion, zither, and hammered dulcimer, combining music-theoretical foundations with research on folk cultural contexts. The program concludes with a bachelor's and a master's degree, both accredited with public law. Students and prospective teachers acquire both methodological and artistic competencies, receive teaching qualifications for school and extracurricular settings, and are enabled to implement cultural projects as well as media-based educational formats. The goal is the sustainable promotion and preservation of Alpine musical culture in the Salzburg region.
Funding is provided through an ongoing grant from the State of Salzburg via the "Association for the Promotion of Music Teacher Training for Alpine Folk Music." Non-profit interest groups, associations, and educational institutions that permanently support the degree program and integrate it into regular instrumental teacher training are funded. As part of the regional cultural education support in the fields of initial and continuing education as well as music, culture & media, the project contributes to strengthening regional folk music and promotes knowledge transfer in national and international project contexts. The basis for funding is the government decision to continue the degree program from the academic year 2022/23 (Number 20011-RU/2021 /107-2021), valid since 01.01.2014 and extended indefinitely. The Office of the Salzburg State Government is responsible for allocating funds and ensures continuous training quality.
