Description

The EU initiative for thermal energy optimization and waste heat utilization in energy-intensive IT rooms and small edge data centers promotes pioneering approaches to improve energy efficiency and resource utilization. Holistic, cost-effective solutions for thermal management and systematic waste heat recovery in facilities with a capacity of 100–500 kW, which are not covered by the Energy Efficiency Directive Recast, are sought. Special attention is given to integration into building management systems, the use of digital twins, and demonstration in different climate zones. With a total budget of €5.25 million, up to three projects will be supported with a funding rate of up to 70%. Eligible applicants are companies, research institutions, non-profit, and public entities from EU member states or associated countries. Applications are possible until 15 September 2027.

Interested research teams and technology providers must form a consortium of at least three independent partners from different countries and demonstrate their operational as well as financial capacity. Funding covers personnel costs, material expenses, subcontractor services, and travel. Real estate acquisition, debt repayment, or retroactive costs are not eligible. Key evaluation criteria are innovation content, implementation efficiency, and market introduction potential. Applications are submitted electronically via the EU funding portal and include a standardized application form, a project description, a financing plan, CVs of key personnel, and the unified application table. The European Commission reviews proposals through a competitive procedure, sets milestones and deliverables, and monitors implementation until final accounting. The objective is to make a significant contribution to climate neutrality and a resilient, digital infrastructure in Europe through innovative pilot projects.
