Description

The Ulrich Wickert Foundation annually awards the Ulrich Wickert Prize for Children's Rights as a recognition for journalists in Germany, Austria, and Plan International partner countries who draw attention to the situation of girls and boys through nuanced and independent contributions. The aim is to raise public awareness of universal children's rights and to sensitize readers to the living realities of young people worldwide. One entry per person may be submitted, featuring a contribution published between January 1 and December 31 of the previous year in print, online, radio, or TV media. Submissions may be made in German, English, French, or Spanish. Applications are accepted until March 31, 2026. Required are a PDF or manuscript version of the contribution, proof of publication date, information about the medium, and basic personal data of the authors.

The award is presented in three main categories: a prize for contributions from Germany and Austria, an international prize for journalists from Plan partner countries, and a special prize for children and young people who advocate for their rights in Plan International media projects. An independent jury evaluates the works based on their nuanced portrayals, comprehensibility for readers, and ability to inspire sustained commitment to child-friendly living conditions. The Ulrich Wickert Foundation regards the award as a contribution to strengthening children's rights and encourages all eligible editors and freelance journalists to submit their reports by the stated deadline, thereby contributing to a fairer future for girls and boys.
