Environmental Funding - Water Management Research

The Environmental Funding Program – Water Management Research supports innovative projects in Vienna in the fields of research & innovation, environmental and nature conservation, as well as energy efficiency & climate protection. As a grant, it is aimed at educational institutions, companies, and private individuals who have recognized experts and references in urban water management and aquatic ecology. Funded are projects in basic research, industrial research in cooperation with operational partners, as well as pre-industrial technology developments focusing on process optimization and achieving market readiness. Studies that contribute to achieving water management goals according to the Environmental Funding Act are also supported. The administration is carried out by Division I 7 of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environment, as well as Regions and Water Management.

Applicants must submit a complete application before the start of the measure and demonstrate their professional qualifications as well as experienced personnel. Eligible costs include project-related personnel costs, material and investment costs; costs incurred before the application and usual operational expenses are excluded. The official application form and a detailed project description including a cost estimate are required for the application. Since the program’s inception on January 1, 2013, research projects can be submitted continuously until December 31, 2028. The funding aims to strengthen research projects that promote sustainable drinking water and wastewater supply structures, protect aquatic ecosystems, and thereby secure the livelihoods of people and nature in the long term. Through this support, innovative solutions are developed that make a measurable contribution to resource efficiency and climate protection.
