Description

The EU-funded support program “Understanding biomass flows in Europe” aims to develop digitally supported monitoring and modeling methods to capture biomass flows across Europe. The focus is on optimizing primary and secondary biomass resources while considering ecological, social, and economic aspects. A consortium of at least three independent partners from EU member states or associated countries – including companies (especially SMEs), public institutions, and non-profit organizations – will develop innovative, low-administration digital tools within 36 months. A key component is cooperation with stakeholders from the bioeconomy, politics, and administration to create scenarios for the actual availability and use of biomass up to 2050 and to evaluate test regions in at least ten countries. The total budget of EUR 6 million fully covers personnel expenses, subcontractor services, material and travel costs, as well as software development, excluding construction measures and real estate acquisitions. Funding is provided as a non-repayable grant with a funding rate of 100%.

Submissions must be made electronically via the EU Funding & Tenders Portal by 17 September 2026, 17:00 Brussels time. Required documents include, among others, the project description, work and timeline plan, financing plan, CVs of the project leaders, and a Gender Equality Plan. Applicants must demonstrate their technical and financial capacities and meet the criteria of “degree of innovation,” “sustainability,” “relevance to the European bioeconomy,” as well as “quality and efficiency of consortium implementation.” The results will contribute to decision-making foundations for sustainable biomass use in politics and industry. Interested public-private actors from business and administration who wish to advance data-driven strategies for the bioeconomy are invited to apply in the prescribed format and become part of this pioneering project.
