Insurance cost contribution for students

The insurance cost contribution for students provides financial support to eligible students from the month following their 27th birthday with a monthly subsidy of €19. This personal contribution helps cover the self-insurance in health insurance according to § 76 para. 1 ASVG and complements existing study grants. Nationwide, recipients of study grants benefit from this ongoing support, which has been granted without a fixed end date since December 31, 2012. A separate application is not required, as the payment is made automatically after the expiration of the entitlement period by the study grant authority.

The prerequisite for claiming this benefit is the receipt of a study grant, the privileged self-insurance in health insurance pursuant to § 76 para. 1 ASVG, and exceeding the age limit of 27 years. The subsidy is paid monthly and increases planning security for students who must finance their health insurance coverage independently, outside of family support. The study grant authority within the portfolio of the Federal Ministry for Women, Science and Research manages the administration and provides comprehensive information on requirements, application deadlines, and additional funding benefits – from foreign study allowances and travel cost subsidies to childcare cost subsidies. This measure not only makes an important contribution to health care but also sustainably strengthens the achievement of educational qualifications in Austria.
