Description

The Franco-German Ecological Volunteering Program (VEFA) in the Itzbach Valley combines practical nature conservation with intercultural exchange within a unique voluntary service structure. Under the sponsorship of the Karsten-Nendel Foundation, participants take on responsible tasks over twelve months in extensive grazing projects, landscape management, and environmental education. These include, among others, the care and feeding of sheep and goats, fence construction, as well as the creation of meadow orchards and nesting aids. The program is professionally supported in cooperation with the French partner CIFÉE and offers space for reflection, language acquisition, and the development of professional as well as personal skills through accompanying seminars. The goal is to provide participants with practical experience in environmental and climate protection while simultaneously strengthening Franco-German understanding.

VEFA is funded through a monthly allowance of €558.17 as well as in-kind benefits valued at €114.85. Applications are open to young people aged 18 to 25 with French or EU citizenship or with proof of a one-year stay in France. Evaluation focuses particularly on motivation and commitment to nature conservation, intercultural openness, and basic language skills. The application process is ongoing: a CV and a motivation letter for up to three placement locations are sufficient to have the documents reviewed in the order of receipt. A project start is possible from September 1, 2026. Through this engagement, participants gain valuable insights into the ecological enhancement of a cross-border cultural landscape and sustainable prospects in environmental and educational sectors.
