Description

Continuing Education Allowance enables employed persons throughout Austria to secure financial support during an educational leave (§ 11 AVRAG) or a release from work (§ 12 AVRAG), provided they can demonstrate participation in a recognized continuing education measure. As a permanent subsidy from social security, this benefit has specifically supported professional qualifications in the field of initial and continuing education since 01.01.2013. The responsible body is the Federal Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs, Health, Care and Consumer Protection in cooperation with the Public Employment Service (AMS). By compensating for the loss of income during the leave or release period, this instrument promotes the continuous development of skills and facilitates re-entry into the labor market.

The funding objective is to increase labor market participation and reduce unemployment through targeted qualification measures. Eligible are employees with a mutual agreement on educational leave or release, as well as proof of employment subject to unemployment insurance for the prescribed minimum duration – differentiated between first-time and repeat applications. Transitional arrangements guarantee the continuation of the allowance if the entitlement began no later than 31.03.2025 or if the leave agreement was concluded by 28.02.2025 and the educational measure started by 31.05.2025. There is no separate application deadline: funding applications can be submitted at any time during the agreed leave or release period. Since the volume is not limited, this support represents a sustainable instrument to strengthen individual competitiveness and opens exciting prospects for professional development.
