Description

The annual "Blooming Schools" competition organized by the Loki Schmidt Foundation invites educational institutions of all school types in Hamburg to design their school grounds in an ecological and nature-friendly manner. Creative, participatory concepts are sought that utilize native wild plants, respect natural processes, and promote biodiversity. Classes, working groups, and after-school care teams can participate, as well as multiple project groups per school. Professional introductory advice from the MOIN Urban Nature Consulting Team supports the development of initial planting concepts, and the State Institute for Teacher Training and School Development offers supplementary training and teaching resources. The goal is to create exemplary models that provide inspiration for other schools and neighborhoods beyond the school fence.

Within the framework of the competition, the submitted school grounds entries are evaluated by a jury based on several criteria: promotion of natural wilderness, regionally sustainable gardening, lived culture of participation, lasting integration into school life, and exemplary status as a lighthouse project. Particularly original and sustainable implementations are awarded in a ceremony that honors commitment to environmental education, social cohesion, and climate protection. The award enhances the visibility of the dedicated schools and contributes to networking projects throughout the city. Through participation, students gain valuable experience in practical nature conservation, actively engage with their environment, and contribute to the shared goal of a greener Hamburg.
