Description
Wilhelm Hartel Prize
This prestigious award honors outstanding life’s work of scholars active in the humanities, social sciences, and cultural studies in Austria. Awarded by the Philosophical-Historical Class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, the prize recognizes international visibility, sustainable research achievements, and the influence of the nominees on the development of their disciplines. Members of the Austrian Academy of Sciences propose candidates; non-regular members as well as corresponding members abroad may also submit nominations. Resubmission is possible up to two times. The selection committee operates according to an international peer-review process to honor those scholars whose work to date has already set pioneering impulses.
With a funding amount of €15,000, the award acknowledges scientific excellence while simultaneously creating incentives for future research projects. Nomination documents include a tabular CV with a publication list, PDFs of the three most important publications, as well as a detailed justification addressing career progression, international networking, and academic sustainability. The next submission deadline is scheduled for 2026; the selection process runs continuously following the start of the period on 01.01.2025. The award is granted annually to specifically promote the diversity and quality of humanities research in Austria and to provide sustainable impulses for the scientific community.
