Description

Since 2021, the Claussen-Simon Foundation has annually awarded a doctoral scholarship for scientific-artistic research as part of its funding program. Interdisciplinary dissertations are supported in which artistic and scientific methods are intertwined in such a way that innovative research approaches emerge. The scholarship under the Dissertation Plus model is aimed at individual doctoral candidates and artists in Germany who wish to secure their livelihood for a period of up to 24 months. Financial resources are granted as a subsidy to allow full focus on the connection between art and science. Additionally, the program offers training formats, networking, and professional exchange to further advance interdisciplinary discourse.

Prerequisites include a completed master's degree or an equivalent qualification for doctoral studies, as well as a formal supervision agreement from a university authorized to award doctorates. Cooperation with a third venue – such as a theater, museum, or gallery – is mandatory to ensure the public visibility of the research results. Another funding requirement is proof of sufficient German language skills for applicants whose first language is not German. For the selection process, in addition to the completed application form, a curriculum vitae, university certificates, a letter of motivation, a research proposal (max. 15 pages), at least one letter of recommendation, and an overview of financial needs and income must be submitted. Evaluation is based on the interdisciplinary approach, the cooperation concept, and the scientific as well as artistic relevance. Application deadlines are published on the Foundation’s website.
