Description

The funding for predator protection measures in Tyrol is aimed at enterprises that wish to secure sheep and goat alpine pastures through controlled grazing management and supplementary protective measures against attacks by large predators (bear, wolf, lynx). Within the framework of innovative pilot projects, essential experiential data is collected to adapt management practices and offset the additional effort. Funding is provided for expert consultations and training, the purchase of fencing materials, as well as the construction of electrified or predator-repellent fences. Furthermore, costs for shepherd employment, investments in alpine infrastructure, animal health measures, and GPS tracking systems for herded livestock can be covered. Scientific monitoring ensures expert evaluation of the results and the preparation of integrative reports, which serve as a basis for future predator protection concepts.

Interested parties are managers of sheep and goat alpine pastures in Tyrol who plan to switch to controlled grazing management and wish to systematically implement predator protection. A prerequisite for application is the continuous supervision of the animals by shepherds, the implementation of controlled grazing management, and the conclusion of a funding agreement with the State of Tyrol. Eligible expenses include, among others, costs for consulting, fence construction, personnel, as well as infrastructure and technology. An informal application including details on pasture size, supervisors, previous and planned management, cost breakdowns, and schedule must be submitted. Applications can be submitted continuously until the budget is exhausted; early contact with the responsible department is recommended no later than autumn before the following alpine season.
