About the funder
The August Schmidt Foundation is a private law foundation based in Bochum. It was established in 1962 by the Industrial Union of Mining, Chemicals and Energy (IGBCE) and is named after its first post-war chairman, August Schmidt. The foundation provides educational grants for the upbringing, vocational training, and further education of orphans of deceased employees within the IGBCE's organizational area, up to the age of 27. In cases of particular hardship, the board may approve additional support. To date, the foundation has supported more than 3,700 children and currently funds around 30 surviving dependents in training.

Mission & Vision
Our mission is to support the education and development of children of deceased employees in the mining, chemical, and energy sectors. Through financial assistance and personal guidance, we aim to create a solid foundation for their entry into professional life and thus secure the continuation of their families.
Target groups
Half and full orphans of employees who were active within the organizational scope of the IGBCE and who died as a result of a work accident or a recognized occupational disease are supported. The target group includes young people up to the age of 27 who are completing a school, vocational, or academic education.
