Beilstein-Institut zur Förderung der Chemischen Wissenschaften

Private foundation

About the funder

The Beilstein Institute for the Advancement of Chemical Sciences is a non-profit foundation under civil law, founded in 1951 by the Max Planck Society, and headquartered in Frankfurt am Main. The institute's activities are financed exclusively from the income generated by its endowment; no public funds or third-party funding are accepted. Since its inception, the focus has been on the communication and dissemination of high-quality information in chemistry: from the classic Beilstein Handbook to the current Beilstein Database and the two Diamond Open Access journals (“Beilstein Journal of Organic Chemistry” and “Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology”). The institute organizes international symposia, promotes data standardization projects, and supports educational and research initiatives such as student academies and museums.

Mission & Vision

Innovation is founded on creativity, research, and the free exchange of knowledge. The Beilstein Institute sees its mission in the global networking of the chemical sciences and promotes information and communication platforms that enable unrestricted access to experimental data and research results. Through diamond open access publications, international symposia, and initiatives on open science, the Institute contributes to accelerating scientific development and strengthening the global research community.

Target groups

The Beilstein Institute is aimed at the international community of chemists as well as related disciplines (e.g., biochemistry, nanotechnology) in research and teaching. It supports specialist authors, symposium organizers, data standardizers, students, educators, and scientific institutions that promote openly accessible publications, events, and data infrastructures.
