About the funder

The Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation is an independent, non-profit foundation under civil law based in Mainz. Since its establishment in 1977, it has been promoting excellent basic research in medicine, biology, chemistry, and pharmacy. With a broad spectrum of funding programs (e.g., Exploration Grants, Rise up!, CoMove), institutional funding initiatives (e.g., AITHYRA Institute, EMBL Imaging Centre), and prestigious scientific awards (Heinrich Wieland Prize, Boehringer Ingelheim Prize, Dissertation Awards), it supports scientists at critical stages of their careers and honors groundbreaking research achievements. In 2024, total expenditures amounted to approximately EUR 21.6 million, of which EUR 20.5 million was allocated to scientific funding and EUR 1.1 million to administration.

Target groups

The target group comprises outstanding scientists in the natural and life sciences – particularly from medicine, biology, chemistry, and pharmacy – at critical stages of their careers. Funding is provided for independent junior group leaders, researchers in their first professorship, dual-career couples establishing new research groups, as well as participants in national and international scientific conferences.
