About the funder
The Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) is the departmental research institution of the Federal Ministry for Housing, Urban Development and Building (BMWSB) within the Federal Office for Building and Regional Planning (BBR). With nearly 400 employees at its locations in Bonn, Berlin, and Cottbus, the BBSR procures, prepares, and analyzes spatially relevant data and information for policy advice at the European, federal, and state levels. It produces reports, expert opinions, and specialized analyses on spatial, urban, and housing development and manages departmental research programs as well as the scientific support of urban development funding.

Mission & Vision
The BBSR supports the BMWSB through application-oriented research and scientific policy advice on all issues related to housing, real estate, and construction as well as urban and spatial development. The goal is to promote equivalent living conditions, sustainable construction and housing concepts, and future-oriented urban and regional development in Germany.
Target groups
The work of the BBSR is primarily aimed at political decision-makers and administrations at the federal, state, and municipal levels. In addition, the institute addresses associations, the construction and housing industry, academia, professional audiences, as well as civil society actors. A key focus is on supporting cities and municipalities in the implementation of funding and investment programs.
