About the funder

Department I/6 of the Federal Ministry for Agriculture, Forestry, Climate and Environment, Regions and Water Management in Austria is responsible for the development and implementation of an integrated flood risk management system in accordance with the EU Floods Directive. It coordinates the preparation of hazard and risk maps, national flood risk management plans, as well as accompanying publications (brochures, guidelines) and works closely with the water management authorities of the federal states, other ministries, research institutions, and EU bodies. The objective is to enhance the safety and resilience of communities and the population through prevention, forecasting, structural and non-structural measures, and awareness-raising.

Mission & Vision

We are committed to providing the best possible protection for people, the environment, and infrastructure against flood hazards. Through an integrative approach, we combine scientific expertise, legal requirements, and practical implementation to realize sustainable and resilient flood protection strategies. Together with federal states, municipalities, specialist authorities, and civil society, we promote preparedness, personal responsibility, and coordinated crisis management.

Target groups

Department I/6 targets water management authorities of the federal states, municipalities, planning and engineering offices, disaster protection organizations, research institutions, as well as professionals from spatial planning and land use. Another focus is on informing and involving citizens in flood-prone areas to improve risk awareness and strengthen self-protection measures.
