About the funder
The Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship is a federal public law foundation established in 1998. In accordance with its statutory mandate, it promotes projects nationwide and internationally that address the causes, history, and consequences of communist dictatorships. This includes financial and substantive support for events, publications, media offerings, scholarship programs, and international exchange formats. Since its inception, several thousand projects have been supported. The foundation works closely with civil society initiatives, research institutions, memorials, and educational organizations to foster a diverse and vibrant culture of reappraisal.

Mission & Vision
The Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship is committed to preserving the memory of the communist dictatorship in the GDR as well as its causes and consequences. It promotes historical-political education and research, strengthens democratic culture, and supports those affected by political persecution. Its goal is to enable a critical engagement with the past through projects and networking activities, thereby contributing to freedom, democracy, and human rights.
Target groups
The funding opportunities are primarily aimed at legal entities under public and private law, including associations, federations, memorials, museums, universities, and institutions engaged in political education. Natural persons may, in exceptional cases, such as for printing cost subsidies or scholarship programs, submit applications. Additionally, the foundation supports victims of political persecution in the GDR as well as their associations and promotes initiatives that focus on culture of remembrance and eyewitness work.
