About the funder

The Carl Zeiss Foundation is one of the oldest and largest scientific funding foundations in Germany. Founded in 1889 by Prof. Dr. Ernst Abbe, it has stood for over 100 years for the promotion of research and teaching in STEM disciplines as well as for the economic security of its foundation companies Carl Zeiss AG and SCHOTT AG. As a private foundation, it combines charitable funding objectives with the entrepreneurial responsibility of its affiliated companies.

Mission & Vision

As a partner for visionary and excellent science, we create space for scientific breakthroughs. Our goal is to enable innovative research through targeted support in the natural and engineering sciences and thereby contribute to solving current societal challenges.

Target groups

The funding programs of the Carl Zeiss Foundation are aimed at universities and scientific institutions in Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate, and Thuringia. Support is provided particularly to professors, junior professors, doctoral candidates, and postdoctoral researchers, junior research group leaders, as well as students and already appointed CZS Foundation Professors.
