About the funder
The Cranach Foundation originated from a citizens' initiative founded in 1989 to save the two Cranach courtyards in Wittenberg. It uses the historic houses at Markt 4 and Schlossstraße 1 as a cultural center for exhibitions of historical and contemporary art, literary and music series, as well as the location for the youth art school and the Cranach Hostel. The Cranach Museum presents the life and work of Lucas Cranach the Elder across two floors, complemented by regularly changing special exhibitions. The foundation is also involved in research (Cranach Digital Archive) and the awarding of scholarships for young artists.
