Deutsche Seemannsschule Hamburg

Private foundation

About the funder

The Deutsche Seemannsschule Hamburg Foundation promotes the training of maritime cadets in Germany without providing training itself. It has a history of around 150 years rooted in Hanseatic tradition, beginning with the founding of the Deutsche Seemannsschule Hamburg by Hamburg shipowners and merchants in 1862. The Foundation's goal is to enhance the quality of maritime training by financially supporting projects at training institutions and trainees. All board members work on a voluntary basis, and administrative expenses are minimal, ensuring that every euro directly benefits young seafarers. The Foundation funds acquisitions such as liferafts, free-fall boats, audiovisual teaching materials, lathes, and equipment for training workshops.

Mission & Vision

We promote maritime youth development in Germany by specifically supporting training institutions and trainees to enhance the quality of education and enable young seafarers to secure better positions in international shipping.

Target groups

The funding programs are aimed at German maritime training institutions (e.g., seaman schools, vocational schools with a maritime focus) that have financing gaps for equipment projects, as well as trainees in ship mechanic and seafaring training, particularly graduates with outstanding examination results, who receive a one-time financial bonus for entering international shipping.
