About the funder

The German Rheumatism Research Center Berlin (DRFZ) is a Leibniz Institute dedicated to the study of immune-mediated rheumatic diseases. It combines basic research, systems biology, translational research, and epidemiology with state-of-the-art technologies to develop preventive approaches and personalized therapies. Through nationwide cohort studies and large patient databases, the DRFZ analyzes disease burden, risk factors, and care gaps. The insights gained are translated into innovative treatment strategies and new diagnostics in close cooperation with clinical partners, particularly Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

Mission & Vision

Our mission is to decipher the underlying disease mechanisms of rheumatic conditions in order to develop targeted and personalized therapies. We promote interdisciplinary exchange between biology, medicine, bioinformatics, and epidemiology to advance innovative approaches from the laboratory bench to clinical application, thereby sustainably improving the quality of life for patients.

Target groups

The funding and award programs of the DRFZ are aimed at early-career scientists and established researchers in the fields of rheumatology and immunology. This includes doctoral candidates, postdocs, and clinical researchers who contribute innovative project ideas in basic research, epidemiology, or translational rheumatology. Through awards such as the Avrion Mitchison Prize, young scientists who make significant contributions to rheumatology research are particularly supported.
